24 heures du Firebird
A couple of days ago, someone mentioned a 24 hour race using barely viable cars.
I made a comment that perhaps someone here that knows Hurley well enough might talk with him about doing something similar, but not necessarily plagiarizing the originators.
Well, I haven't been able to get it out of my mind for the last couple of days (I know, certain pills can help with things like that...).
I don't have any idea how much Firebird charges for a day's lease of the track, but I would think that there enough racers nearby that should be able to float that kind of money if the entry fee was a couple of hundred dollars with logistics perhaps a couple more.
The ideal marketing could be a sponsor arrangement that supports a destructive disease like ALS, MS or Breast Cancer or something that could make us all feel a little better and prouder. If it's ALS, I'm in for at least a few hundred right off the start.
I know some of you would probably think it's a pipe dream, but I think that properly promoted (Smart guys like Hurley, Chef, etc.), it could end up being a yearly “institution” (yes, I know, some of you probably think I belong in one).
Some thinking on the specs:
>$1000.00 for the purchase of the car, complete with engine-gearbox (no $900 little Chevy with a 600 HP Traco small block in it),
Costs outside of that, being approved safety equipment, engineer (me, or some other poseur) approved roll cage and installation, seat and seat mounting, fuel cell and normal safety effects like where the exhaust leaves the car, no fuel lines through the cabin, two fire extinguishers, etc.
Steel wheels (size, as came with the car, with no previous damage or rust), or Aluminum aftermarket (no Magnesium; Magnesium tries to return to its elemental state from the second its made and with questionable history it could be a safety issue) enough brake pad material to get through 24 hours of hard traffic,
Minimum three drivers (two of which must be somewhat sober....),
Reasonably young, DOT rated “V” or better rated tires in good repair,
Fluids “catch can(s)” or equivalent,
Drivers' suit and underoos, approved (at least dated the last couple of approval cycles before this current one, or at minimum, at least some DOT approval... no painted on, leather or Nazi helmets) full face helmet,
Operating headlights and tail lights, two additional, front facing auxiliary lights suggested,
Other than the windshield and back light, no windows, an approved driver's window net (spend some money on this, for Christ-sake),
Able to go though a cursory, sort of racing safety check (brake fluid, no fuel lines on exhaust stuff, etc.),
Yes, I know I'm just dreaming, but I think it would be a promoters dream and one of the most kick-ass things racers in this area can do with your clothes on.
What say yee?

Doc, thanks for keeping your mind sharp because it's just the catalyst others need to think outside the box.
Firebird is like $3,500.00 give or take a hundred - Easy money to pull from those who want in. Insurance is the kicker but not with PAS since they are already on it.
It's just a matter of sponsorship/hype/entree $ and the love of sweet jesus to bless all the cars/drivers.
Hurley is the stock that is needed to make the soup. After the stock is done it's up to the soup to spread the word to the masses which can be all Racersweb members.
Simply put PASA is the foundation that's needed to secure insurance through an organizational standpoint. Once that's done along with a date/entree fee, waivers and the particulars it would be time to launch to the public through social media port holes (free) and then to anyone that can blow it up further if they have the means.
Basically it can be done relatively easy with the above steps.

Hoss, where's the "proposal"?
Key-ryst, I've laid down a "boilerplate" on at least some direction in specs, but would certainly welcome additional or different specs.
If promoted in the right direction, it could attract significant support from the broader community, and tied in with a "charity", it gets the blessing of acceptance from major contributors and the media. With media exposure, the "win" could be significant, meaning exposure and maybe even some cash.

Because of my basic ignorance in how to do this makes me feel like I've smashed my nose into my upper cranial vault enough, but still find it worthwhile even if I can't get anyone to take interest,
A simpleton like me only has a certain attention span....

over analysis creates paralysis - keeping it simple is always best as a baseline in my opinion but what do I know I'm just a cook.

I've got a couple of friends that have no clue how much money it would take to run even a 24-hour shitbox race interested in the concept.....the follow-through will be more difficult though
