All through my career, where I was paid, sometimes, size large, to invent things on a daily basis, I've found at least two ways to advance an idea or design:
One, look around and use some of what you see being done professionally and successfully by others, and frame your idea around that idea that only your ethical purity interferes...
Second, Creativity is a self-satisfying personal accomplishment, but plagiarism is far faster and easier to do.
The reason that I started at a >$1000 car is that safety is a growing concern, both with the public, the sanctioning entity and the insurance community.
It needs to be based on "fun", because anyone in their right mind doesn't want to cheat by throwing a ton-o-money at something like this, that a kid that works at a OK can be competitive... there nothing to be gained in it.
Of course the good part of that kind of pedantic behavior of utilizing a "ringer" like a Penske-like preparation can be taken care of by some of the competitors planning on capture the offender, take him/her out in the middle of the desert that night, but phuck them (in a nice romantic way...) , and then call his girlfriend on where to find him.
With brilliant, semi-sober crazy people putting this on, all kind of fun can be had.
